ABOVE: Is it snow or granite? As you get near the White Divide, you can see how it got its name. This is also the doorstep of the Blackcap Basin just above the river. Could cross-country be any easier?
The Doorway to Blackcap Basin
When you near the open granite areas in the lower section of this canyon (in the 9400 foot area), take a break and wander over to the other side of the infant Kings River to enjoy some of the most impressive areas of multi-acred unjointed glacier polished sweeping granite landscape you will ever see. Further upward, you will cross a wooden causeway (near 9600 feet), and you better have your good hiking boots on, because the trail begins a strenuous and relentlessly steep climb upward on a rough trail to the meadows below Portal Lake.
