North Fork Kings River Country

North Fork Kings River 1

ABOVE: Looking back at the last of the "Two Passes" from the shore of the unnamed highest lake of the basin. There may not be one best way to do this pass: take the situation as it comes and make good decision.

Descending to Devils Punchbowl

Back on the rout to Devils Punchbowl, descend to the lowpoint of the ridge overlooking our destination lakes below. A ramp, if not choked with snow, will lead you to the first point of this difficult descent. You can avoid any snow by walking to your left to some granite ramps and steps (that may require you to remove your pack to maneuver) that parallels the snow filled ramp to the right. After this first obstacle, there are several possibilities: you can travel to your left and descend among steep ledges and ramps, or you can work your way downward through steep talus and occasional ramps till you reach the welcome meadow below. Whichever route you take, extreme caution is in order. Don't hesitate to retreat and try another route if you find your way blocked by impassable terrain. Take your time, move carefully, and always leave yourself a retreat route.
