Terraces of Lakes...

Work your way among bog and meadow to the highest small unnamed lake, passing it on the right (North). Head northeast towards beautiful Little Shot Lake, descending on the shoulder of a granite slope. From above the lakes, the outstanding view looks like three great watery terraces spread out below you. Do not descend all the way to the lake unless you want to camp at the excellent campsite on the southeast shore of the lake on a small peninsula. At about 100 feet above the campsite, traverse to the north shore of the lake where you will find the beginning of the trail to Devils Punchbowl, a good campsite among trees, and a more exposed good campsite on granite nearer the shore. In the tree shaded campsite, the puzzling lack of a fire-pit at this lake can be remedied by collecting the scorched looking rocks scattered about into a small safe fire-ring. This is a natural packer campsite, not used for many years, with a large meadow for grazing just northeast of the lake. Cross-country travel to Blackrock Lake is easy from the meadow, with nearly effortless access to Red Mountain Basin from there. The trail descends (with a possible blowdown or two blocking the way) to Big Shot Lake and the fair camping there.
